Embracing Pink

Posted by Lonica on June 23rd, 2010

Nearly a year ago I was eight months pregnant. I decided that the time had arrived to carve out a space for our soon-to-be-born fetus. With coupon in hand (who doesn’t arrive at JoAnn’s with a coupon?) I walked into our neighborhood JoAnn’s in search of yellow fabric.

I was being good: budget conscious, gender neutral, and ‘working with what I had’. I perused the available selections, surprised at the lack of anything in the yellow palette. Feeling frustrated with a lack of options—I did have a coupon that was about to expire—I spied this eye-catching paisley across the way.

It jumped at me. I had to have it. A short search later, I found a number of other fabrics that would coordinate with my preferred paisley. A quick glance at the price tag made me gulp. I jumped into something of justification mode—Scott’s favorite.

It would definitely be a ‘girl’ room with so much pink. It would still match the already green walls, though. I could turn the red, yellow, and green comforter over to the neutral taupe so the pink wouldn’t clash. My mother approved of my selection (via a picture message conversation). I figured, with the combined sale and coupon advantages I was justified.

Only catch? I had to order the fabrics, which provided little likelihood that the room would be complete before her birth. I was hopeful, though.

My wait ended up being more like 10 weeks, since one of my original, super-cute flowered fabrics was discontinued, but no one actually told me. Many phone calls, visits, and grumpy conversations later, I finally left JoAnn’s with my long-anticipated, but consequently steeply-discounted, fabric. Then I got to work.

I bought: lamps, cribs, baskets, changing tables, shelving, and a rocking chair. I painted and spray painted. I sewed. I organized. I arranged. I even hot-glued (yes, I’m sure that can be a verb).

And, when I was finally done (many months later), I stepped back and declared it Good. Good with a capital g, that is. I like to think that Amelia thinks it’s Good too.

A Shower of Babies

Jenny and I are a bit crazy… but you knew that already, right?

Consequently, we agreed to host (along with a few other women) two baby showers in less than one week. We tackled the decorating details—an involved task, but something we enjoyed and thought turned out well. Here’s a peek into what we did:

The first invite included husbands and children, so we figured—in an approximately 500 sq. ft. space—things could potentially turn into a bit of a circus. We were hoping to extend the party a bit outside, but the weather didn’t cooperate. Instead, we decided to keep our circus theme all inside…

We wanted to come up with a way to connect the circus theme and shower together. Thanks to Scott’s help, this is what we came up with. (We really don’t think it was the Greatest Shower ever.)

Plenty of balloons and bright banners helped set the stage.

There was lots of yummy, Circus foods to be had: Peanuts, Kettle Corn, Animal Crackers, Licorice, Saltwater Taffy, Cupcakes, Cookies, and Orange Segments (it was at the Bean’s afterall).

Scott even helped along our theme by wearing the clown wig!

There were lots of fun games for the kiddos—ring toss, pin the nose of the Clown, Guess the Baby’s Fortune, and estimating the popcorn in the jar. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of these.

I hope Anita enjoyed her shower as much as we enjoyed putting it together!

Since Easter was upon us, we decided to make the second shower, for Kelsey, something of a Spring/Easter theme. We had a lot of fun hanging out and pulling together the decorations.

I wasn’t too happy with the way my ‘A Baby Boy is Hatching’ sign turned out, but it did get our point across…

I made lots of little fabric birds that hung from the ceiling.

And from the dining room chandelier.

After some last-minute resourcefulness, I was rather pleased with the way the shelving display and table turned out.

And of course there was lots of good food to be had.

All of these events made for an awfully busy week, but it was fun to get the creative juices flowing towards a good cause. These baby boys certainly are lucky to have Anita and Kelsey for moms!

I hope it matches something…

… or so Lonica said about her latest bow creation. In case you don’t know, she has gone a little wild in the bow-making department.  Amelia has bows for any occasion.

The little device next to Lonica’s leg (a “Bow-dabra”) is a necessary part of any bow-maker’s toolkit.

The bows have multiplied and multiplied.  We ran out of room on the ribbon for Amelia’s bows, so Lonica did the only logical thing - make an entire board for nothing but holding and displaying more bows.  This normally hangs in Amelia’s room.  After today we might need another one.

Scott: Why does Amelia have two bows on?
Lonica: Isn’t the yellow one cute?  I just hope it matches something.

In reality, Lonica’s creativity is one of the things that I’ve always loved about her.  We might need a new creative outlet though, because a little girl only needs so many bows.

Amelia Marie Rowley

After a somewhat long, but uneventful labor, our 8 pound, 15 ounce Amelia Marie Rowley was born.

Despite the obvious difficulties of delivering a large baby, Lonica and Amelia are doing great.

She has long brown hair like her mom…

The birth was amazing, everyone in the room gasped at her size when fully delivered.
