And now a moment of silence

Posted by Scott Rowley on October 30th, 2007

There I was, studying torts in the basement when the unthinkable happened.  My $50 leather Ikea chair finally gave out.  I of course fell on the ground and almost hit my head.  Once I finished contemplating the products liability suit I could bring (I was studying torts at the time) I thought about my chair.

The chair was with me through many long nights.  It presumably came from Sweden and made its way to Tempe where our paths first crossed.  I don’t know that I chose the chair so much as the chair chose me.  Immediately upon usage it began leaning to one side that I found quite comfortable.  Others scorned my chair saying it was weak or of low quality.  Some even implied I had mistreated it.  But my chair understood me, it compromised to how I wanted to sit in it.  Now left with the broken pieces of something that I assembled I wonder if Ikea designs their products to break into neatly sized pieces so they’re easier to throw away.  That would be very considerate of them.  I won’t give up on this chair though, it’s not down for the count.  Stay tuned for the re-birth of the chair.

Oh! Big news!

No, sorry I am not pregnant. But I do have a new job. Well, I will be working at the same school, I’ll just be the English teacher. The old English teacher (ironically) decided to move to Phoenix so he and his wife could take care of his sick father-in-law. It seems like a rather random and quick decision, but oh well. So, the director of the school asked me if I would switch to English (seeing as how I’m certified to teach English) and after some quick thinking I decided to take the position. Now I’ll be working with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. It will be quite different from High school at Red Mountain, but I think it will be an improvement. I got a pay raise which makes it a valuable transition. Additionally, after the headache of trying to figure out what I’m doing wears off, I think I’ll enjoy it much better than the Title 1 Math Specialist Position. We’ll see how it goes though. I start tomorrow, so wish me luck!

A Halloween Mystery

Posted by Lonica on October 28th, 2007

Anyone have any idea where the cool, already-carved-pumpkin-complete-with-a-candle on our door-step came from? It just arrived this morning and we have no idea. Anyway, thanks to whoever sent it our way!

I’ve been tagged–what?

Posted by Lonica on October 28th, 2007

Okay Kim, so I approved your “You’ve been tagged” comment on my blog about a week ago and thought, “Hmmm… I wonder what she means by that.” I wasn’t really sure though (and obviously too busy to go back and look at your website) so I let the thought recede to the back of my mind. Now that I know I guess I’ll follow the rules too. So… here’s the instructions Kim posted: The rules are to post 6 items about yourself (habits, traits, deep dark secrets, etc.) on your blog, then tag 6 more people to do the same. Then you have to post a comment on their blog so they know they have been tagged.

1. Deep dark secret: (Well, it’s not that deep or dark, but it’s something.) My favorite season has always been fall. And it still is. Especially now that I actually live someplace where the leaves change colors and there are festive fall things to do. Although, now that I look back on it, fall was my favorite season because it meant that the unrelenting heat had come to an end and I could start wearing cute winter clothes. Now I like fall for all the reasons most normal people do: the leaves look amazing as they change colors, football makes every weekend a festive one, having a cup of hot chocolate actually sounds good, picking pumpkins feels like the right thing to do, and everywhere you turn there’s some sort of festive activity going on. However, there’s just one problem with this new appreciation of fall (and this is where the deep, dark secret comes in) the weather outside is already as cold as it ever got in Mesa, AZ. I don’t know that I’m going to be able to handle a real winter!

2. Favorites: Coming home from work, taking off my jewelry and wearing comfy clothes; having Scott make dinner; reading a good book under a warm blanket; having a clean and organized house; having a trip to look forward to.

3. Fears: I’m afraid that I’m not very good at making friends. I always want more than I have, and am not really sure how to go out and get more… I especially miss my friends now that I’ve moved someplace new and have no one to go shopping with. Mom, want to come visit so I can buy warm winter clothes that I never needed in Mesa? (How pathetic does that sound?)

4. Habits: Checking my e-mail and my blog to see if anyone even bothers to read the retarded things I post on it. Somehow I am always ridiculously excited when it tells me “you have one comment to moderate” and am very disappointed to find that it is just a spam. Probably for that reason everyone has to put up with my lengthy responses on their blogs—I want everyone to be excited to get a response.

5. Talents: I never thought I was very musically inclined. I always played the piano, but was never that attached to it or passionate about it. Now that I’ve been called to be both the primary pianist and the ward nursery musician, I’m starting to figure out that I must have some sort of musical talent (at least the Lord wants me to have one, I highly doubt that I’m there yet).

6. Oddities: I love playing pranks on Scott. The other day I poured a glass of cold water on him while he was in the shower. The next morning while I was in the shower the water suddenly went cold. I screamed, then turned the water off, then turned it back on again—it was warm—five seconds later it was cold again. I repeated this process a number of times until I finally realized that Scott was down in the basement turning the water heater on and off, laughing at me all the time. This one was almost as good as the time Scott hid in the broom closet waiting for me to finish sweeping the porch and then jumped and scared me witless.

There, now I’m going to go tag some people…

Cedar Point

Posted by Scott Rowley on October 27th, 2007

Last night we went to Cedar Point with Dave and Candace, who were nice enough to share some free tickets. It was incredible. Cedar Point was easily the best theme park I have ever been to - the rides are beyond anything else I’ve ever seen. We rode on the Power Tower, Millenium Force, Maverick, Top Thrill Dragster, and Raptor. My favorite was Maverick, where you take a 95 degree plunge before going lightning fast on an insanely twisting track for over 2 minutes. Top Thrill Dragster was a close second, completely different though, on this one you get up to 120 MPH, rocket over 400 feet up, peak out, then twist back into the ground just as fast and stop, all within 20 seconds.
Here is a video I took while waiting in line for Top Thrill Dragster.

All four of us strapped in and ready to launch on Power Tower.
